Deep work well on hip roofs and gable ends with an angled soffit but with a boxed eave return they look too heavy.

A gable roof is a type of roof design where two sides slope downward toward the walls and the other two sides include walls that extend from the bottom of the eaves to the peak of the ridge. Gambrel roofs are a type of gabled roof. This is the portion of the roof that protrudes beyond the side of a house or building. If the lower section of the roof rafters or rafter tail extends beyond the exterior wall the projection forms an overhang or eave.

This design makes maximum use of space under the roof. A hybrid of hipped and gable with the gable wall at the top and hipped lower down. Commonly associated with dutch building traditions and barns they break each sloping roof section into two parts one close to the ridge that is relatively flat and one closer to the eaves that drops down steeply. Due to the steeper angle of gable roof the maximum width of the eaves is narrower than other shed styles.

In contrast a gable or rake is the overhang of a building that occurs on the side that is topped by a gable roof. A gable roof consists of two sloped planes that meet at the ridge or peak and rest on the top plates of 2 parallel exterior walls. A rake on the gable end of the roof can be created with the construction of additional roof framing. I recently built a small outbuilding with a 6 in 12 pitch roof that offers a perfect example for showing the process i use to build eaves and rakes.
